3 Orange Spain and DAZN using mABR for multiscreen sports
Broadpeak’s multicast ABR technology is being harnessed for multiple viewing devices, including Smart TVs, in what is thought to be a first for Europe. The technology is designed for low-latency streaming while saving bandwidth versus unicasting.

Broadpeak’s multicast ABR technology is being used by Orange in Spain in a co-implementation with sports broadcaster DAZN that covers multiple viewing devices, including Smart TVs, in what is thought to be a first for Europe. The technology is designed to stream live content with very low latency while giving network operators substantial bandwidth gains when compared to unicasting. Orange notes the ability to scale its network management to cope with the most popular content.

Orange claims it is the first Spanish service provider using mABR for streaming (and the only operator in Europe using it across different end devices). According to Carlos Ruf, Technology and Development Director at Orange TV: “The mABR technology enabled us to reduce our investments in CDN growth as well as guaranteeing an excellent quality of service during crucial events.”

Orange started using the multicast ABR technology in its network this year for delivery of premium DAZN content in Spain, including La Liga, Formula 1 and MotoGP, on the most popular devices carrying the DAZN app. Orange and DAZN are working to extend the use of mABR to more devices and live events.

“We are convinced that deploying this technology in our home gateways will enable us to extend its benefits to a greater number of customers and services in the future,” says Ruf.

Robin Oakley, VP Distribution Engineering at DAZN, comments: “We are very proud to have integrated the mABR technology in most of the devices in which our app is available, including some of the most popular Smart TVs and Android devices. We are working to ensure that more DAZN users can benefit from this technology through Orange’s network and can enjoy our content in an optimal way.”

Broadpeak has already been working with DAZN for two years, thanks to a partnership in Italy.
