Even though it is not yet five months old, and has only just launched in the major Western European markets, the Disney+ direct-to-consumer service has now racked up a milestone of gaining over 50 million paid subscriptions.

What makes the growth more impressive is the constant rate at which Disney+ has added customers. Only weeks after launch The Mandalorian which only weeks became the most demanded programme in US TV history and by 28 December 2019 Disney+ had registered 26.5 million customers. At the company’s fourth quarter results analysts’ call on 5 February, CEO Bob Eiger revealed that by February 2020 had added three million more.
In the past two weeks, Disney+ rolled out in eight Western European countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. Additionally, Disney+ became available last week in India, where it is offered in conjunction with the existing Hotstar service, and already accounts for approximately eight million of Disney+’s 50 million paid subscribers.
“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” commented Kevin Mayer, chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International commenting on the benchmark. “Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+.”
