The multi-sport event for veterans was founded by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex after he attended the Warrior Games in the US in 2013 and was inspired by the power of sport to help combat veterans suffering from injury and illness recover physically, psychologically and socially. The 2020 Invictus Games will take place 9–16 May at The Hague, The Netherlands and bring together over 500 competitors from 19 nations to compete in a series of adaptive sports, such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and in-door rowing.

The documentary I am Invincible, filmed entirely in 4K UHD HDR, is slated to premiere April 18. It will go behind the scenes of the Invictus Games to tell the stories of the veterans competing and their journeys from trauma to recovery and their lives beyond their disabilities.

Featured participants include Jari Ylanen from Denmark, a former combat soldier who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, who suffers from PTSD and sees the Invictus Games as a way to help him better understand his trauma. Josue Barron from the US lost his left leg and eye in Afghanistan, and now proudly represents the US in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair cycling. Ruth Irish, who was in the US Navy for 10 years, has been diagnosed with cancer. For her, training for the Invictus Games is a distraction she needs to forget her chronic pain, even if just for a second.

Following the success of Modern Day Gladiators, which premiered in 2019 and the prison series Street Kings in Jail, I am Invincible is the third Insight TV show co-produced with VICE Studios.

“The word invictus means unconquerable in Latin and it is an apt moniker for the games that feature such incredibly inspiring and undaunted athletes,” commented Marco Frazier, SVP of Insight TV Studios US. “In I am Invincible, we aim to do justice to not only the fortitude of the men and women competing in this year’s Invictus Games, but to provide audiences with the reality of their lives…VICE Studios shared our passion and vision for this series and we’re once again creating 4K UHD content together that is both an exceptional sensory experience, as well as riveting storytelling.”

“At VICE Studios, we are committed to bringing the stories of inspirational characters to life and producing content of the highest quality. We look forward to continue working with Insight TV to create authentic and insightful shows that appeal to audiences globally,” added Stefan Thieleman, general manager, VICE Studios Benelux.
