Looking at a world which it says could see video could make up 90% of 5G traffic as a result of the uptake of direct-to-consumer services, Swedish telecoms components software firm Enea has revealed that it has successfully optimised Apple TV+ over mobile networks.

The company says that it achieved this just less than 24 hours after the service launched on 1 November using the Enea Openwave traffic management technology. Algorithms, which are device-, resolution-, codec- and context-aware, were used to optimise Apple’s encrypted video content dynamically to deliver what was said to be a higher quality viewing experience to mobile users that reduces video stalling and increases video watch time.

Enea Openwave is designed to provide mobile operators with 5G-ready products for the mobile core. Its 5G core solutions provide a common data layer to unify subscriber data.

The company senses a huge opportunity for its products as 5G deployments start to grow, and OTT providers ramp up investment in streaming services. It added that streaming demands will intensify when on 12 November Disney+ launches to compete with Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video. After this in 2020 will be a host of other streaming services including HBO Max and NBCUniversal’s Peacock.

Enea says that its Openwave’s machine learning-based technology will be able to optimise these streaming services dynamically as they go live. “Managing the video experience is vital for operators to ensure end-user quality of experience”, explained Enea Openwave senior vice president of products, sales and marketing Indranil Chatterjee.

“Within hours of its launch, our machine learning-based technology detected and optimised Apple TV+. Conventional technology is not fit for purpose, as it requires manual configuration – time operators just don’t have. Our solution works across OTT streams and takes into account user device, application, radio congestion and ultimately delivers streaming video to mobile devices at a higher quality with reduced stalling.”
