Global telco Vodafone Group has made significant enhancements to its video service, improving subscribers’ entertainment experiences and deploying cloud-hosted and cloud-operated security services.

vodafone 13Sep2019Vodafone offers broadband, TV, mobile and telephone services to 640 million customers in 24 countries as one of the world's leading mobile communications providers.

As regards viewing experience, TiVo is to provide Vodafone customers with personalised search and recommendations through its Personalized Content Discovery (PCD) solution. Vodafone is introducing PCD as part of the new Vodafone TV service in Portugal, the first country to deploy its new Intelligent Voice Search feature. It uses TiVo’s Conversation, a natural language voice solution, that enables users to find and enjoy entertainment content by speaking into their remotes. TiVo’s Insight functionality will also help Vodafone enable content discovery optimisation, promotions targeting and audience engagement monitoring through the analysis of actual viewer behaviour data.

Vodafone has already deployed TiVo’s search and recommendations and predictions capabilities to customers in Spain, Italy, Greece and Romania.

“We are dedicated to providing our subscribers with a truly unique and engaging entertainment experience,” said Miguel Rodrigues, head of TV development at Vodafone. “With TiVo’s Personalized Content Discovery platform, we are able to strengthen our search and recommendation capabilities as well as provide superior voice search using free-flowing conversational dialogue. Combined, these capabilities give us the intelligence and aptitude to tailor and transform the content discovery experience for our customers.”

As regards security, Vodafone has deployed the NAGRA cloud.SSP cloud-hosted and cloud-operated security services platform, to help protect its TV services across a large number of operating companies, including not just Portugal but also Spain, Greece, Italy and Romania. The NAGRA Connect client and player complement the end-to-end security solution to enable security for VTV across set-top boxes, web browsers, open devices and connected TVs.

The announcement marks the first major rollout of NAGRA cloud.SSP at scale, supporting a major service provider operating in different countries. Based on a SaaS model and using a multi-tenant cloud platform, it supports each operator market as a single tenant with secure device authentication and session management features.

“Securing both the content and the service is key to Vodafone and NAGRA security solutions are best-in-class,” commented Nuno Sanches, group head of fixed product development at Vodafone. “As we continue to roll out VTV to more of our operating countries, we rely on NAGRA to ensure that we remain at the forefront of service protection and provide the very best product offering to our consumers.”
