Much to the delight of the large body of fans of Spanish football in the country, the football league of Spain, LaLiga has at the eleventh hour, closed a deal with ITV to see its 2019/20 season games shown free-to-air in the UK and Ireland.

Signed only hours before the season kicks off with a Lionel Messi-less Barcelona facing off against Athletic Club of Bilbao, the deal will see initially a game from each of the first three matchdays of the new LaLiga season shown live on ITV4 and the ITV Hub LIVE online video service. In addition to the season opener, confirmed games also comprise Barça's first home game against Real Betis on 25 August and arch rival Real Madrid's trip to Villarreal on 1 September.

Negotiations are ongoing between La Liga and ITV for the broadcast of live matches throughout the rest of the season but already weekly highlights of all the LaLiga Santander action will also be shown on both ITV and ITV4 and the ITV Hub following each matchday.

The announcement follows ITV4’s successful coverage of LaLiga during the final months of the 2018/19 season after then rights holder Eleven Sports hit fulfilment problems.
