Inspired by the drama produced by Thames Television in the 1970s which were loosely based on the novels by Nicolas Freeling and which aired for five seasons, the last in 1992, the new Van der Valk will once again centre on the investigations of Dutch detective Piet Van Der Valk in and around the city of Amsterdam.

The original provided British audiences with their first truly international detective – a complex, thoughtful and ‘real’ sleuth who tackled tough crimes against a picturesque Dutch backdrop. The new series will reimagine Van der Valk in the lively and enigmatic city, following an engaging, unapologetic and street-smart detective as he leads his dynamic team in solving a raft of mysterious crimes using astute human observation and inspired detection. Marc Warren (Safe, Mad Dogs) is cast in the eponymous role and written by Chris Murray (Midsomer Murders, Lewis). Maimie McCoy (The Three Musketeers) features as Lucienne Hassell, his fiercely competent right-hand woman.

The 3 x 90’ series is co-commissioned ARD Degeto for Das Erste (ARD) and all3media international and is being filmed with Company Pictures producing and Dutch company NL Film co -producing. The series will be executive produced by Michele Buck (Lewis, Parade’s End, Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and Poirot) for Company Pictures and Louise Pedersen (Blood) for all3media international and Sebastian Lückel for ARD Degeto with Sabine Brian as co- producer for NL Films and Keith Thompson (Vikings, Foyle’s War) serving as series producer.

“It’s thrilling to be recreating Van der Valk, a contemporary detective series with attractive, intriguing characters, danger and humour - and a fantastic backdrop in Amsterdam,” said Company Pictures executive producer Michele Buck. “We are delighted to be working with all3media international and ARD as commissioners - and are very proud that, as we start filming, we already have further partners in place whilst still in production.”

“We are honoured that Company Pictures and all3media international have put their trust in us to produce the wonderful series,” added NL Film & TV producer Sabine Brian. “We’re delighted to work with a lot of talented professionals on this series and are looking forward to the final results.”
