Teqball, one of the world’s fastest developing sports, has given its growth a boost by the signing of international media partnership between its governing body FITEQ (Fédération Internationale de Teqball) and Eurosport.

The sport is played on a curved ping-pong like table requiring football skills. It has attracted support from a number of high-profile international football players and was recommended for inclusion in the Asian Games only three years after the sport was established. With recognition already received from the Olympic Committee of Asia – governing 45 countries from the region – FITEQ has the ambition to have the sport included in the official programme of future Olympic Games.

The Eurosport deal marks the first time FITEQ has partnered with a broadcaster and is aimed to promote international exposure and awareness of teqball and FITEQ’s international events throughout the year, including the third Teqball World Cup later this year.

As part of the package, Eurosport will execute a TV and digital ad campaign, covering 54 countries throughout Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions, as part of FITEQ’s strategy to raise awareness of teqball in new territories and to increase participation as it aims for teqball to fulfil its Olympic ambitions.

The partnership kicks off this month with coverage of the African Beach Teqball Cup on 18 June in Sal, Cape Verde as part of the African Beach Games run by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). Fourteen African nations are set to compete for the doubles title as part of a demonstration tournament at the inaugural games, with Juventus football star Douglas Costa and Portuguese legend Simão Sabrosa playing in a special all-star tournament with local footballers Ryan Mendes, Fernando Maria Neves, Pedro Leitão Brito (Bubista) and Brazilian teqball star Natalia Guitler.

“We believe the partnership with Eurosport will make a significant contribution to growing awareness of teqball in new territories, increasing uptake of the sport and driving interest in our events and competitions,” said FITEQ vice-president and co-founder Viktor Huszár. “We’re delighted to get this underway at the African Beach Teqball Cup and look forward to introducing the sport of teqball to more and more people throughout the world.”
