Television Broadcast Limited (TVB) in Hong Kong has deployed Harmonic's EyeQ content-aware encoding for its myTV SUPER OTT platform.

TVB 15JUne2019TVB, which commenced broadcasting on 19 November 1967, operates five digital HD channels and annually produces about 600 hours of dramas and 23,000 hours of infotainment programmes such as news, current affairs, variety and travelogue. In 2016, it launched OTT services myTV SUPER and TVB Anywhere.

The broadcaster is using EyeQ technology to deliver live HD OTT channels on set-top boxes using the HEVC codec. EyeQ encoding optimises bandwidth for OTT services and is designed to help grow profits and improve quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) providers. These are said to be achieved through reduced network delivery and storage costs, an increased ability to reach more consumers over congested mobile networks, and by enabling a more consistent viewing experience with enhanced video quality and less buffering.

"Today's television viewers expect the same flawless, uninterrupted quality of experience for OTT as broadcast," said Tony Berthaud, vice president of sales and services, APAC, at Harmonic. "Our EyeQ content-aware encoding enables TVB to achieve constant video quality for OTT and improved speeds for video delivery. With the bandwidth savings that EyeQ encoding provides, TVB can enhance its offering and deliver valued-added services like UHD and new sport channels in the future, keeping viewers engaged and watching longer."
