UK television audience measurement provider BARB has commissioned television audience measurement (TAM) provider Kantar to roll out its new Focal Meter router meter across all broadband homes on its panel.

KANTAR 18March2019The Focal Meter will measure viewing across four screens — namely, TVs, smartphones, tablets and PCs — from IP-delivered video content from all broadcasters and complement its existing tools which measure linear and time-shifted content viewed on TV sets.

The new framework will allow for the first time the collection of viewing data on smartphones by individual panellists thus allowing demographic profiling of the platform. It is also designed to provide greater insight into the TV set viewing that is currently unidentified by enabling identification of aggregate level viewing to SVOD and other online video services. BARB believes that this could be as much as 20% . The toolkit will also enable delineation of (broadcaster) on-demand and online box set viewing and distinguish this from time-shifted personal video recorder (PVR) viewing.

“We are very excited and proud to have been commissioned by BARB to extend the scope of our measurement service on the world’s leading television audience measurement panel,” said Richard Poustie, UK managing director of audience intelligence, media division at Kantar. “Amongst many other capabilities Focal Meter will significantly enhance the measurement of four-screen viewing and audience profiling by device type and introduce smartphone viewing for the first time.”
