Star India is readying the launch of two regional language versions of National Geographic channel, in Tamil and Telugu, on 20 June.
Both National Geographic Tamil and National Geographic Telugu will have a maximum retail price (MRP) of INR2.The channels will replace National Geographic People HD and National Geographic Music HD, which will be discontinued on the same day, following approval by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for the change in channel names.
The move marks the first foray by National Geographic into India’s regional language space. Its competition in the infotainment sector Discovery Communications has run Discovery Tamil since 2011. In addition, AETN18, the 51:49 joint venture between TV18 and A+E Networks, is planning to launch History TV18 Tamil.
