The inaugural week of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 recorded a 15% rise in domestic TV viewers to a record 283 million, according to broadcaster Star India.

IPL 2019 logo 8 April 2019Some 33.1 million average impressions registering a growth of 28% has set a viewing record in the history of the hugely popular T20 cricket tournament. The viewership data is based on BARC (TV + OOH) and only match telecast hours have been considered.

Regionalisation has spurred growth with the audience in Hindi Speaking Markets (HSM) growing 32% and that in the South growing 19% compared to last year’s data for the opening week.

The tournament is being broadcast in eight languages in India – English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Bengali, with Marathi and Malayalam on Sundays.

Star  has also sought to improve its reach by launching a a curated feed for families and children called Super Funday. It is telecast every Sunday on Star Gold, and as resulted in a massive growth of 41% in viewership among children versus last year.

In total, Star is broadcasting the tournament across 24 channels, with over 100 experts from around the globe providing its IPL 2019 commentary and analysis.
