Aiming to raise the bar on both basic technological innovation and design, global telecoms giant Huawei has announced a range of products encompassing 5G and its first foldable phone.


At Mobile World Congress 2019, Huawei has announced multiple products that it claims will bring ‘outstanding’ high-speed connectivity to users and bring a hyperconnected, all-scenario experience closer than ever before. The new range includes an updated HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, the new mainstream PC notebooks HUAWEI MateBook 13 and HUAWEI MateBook 14, 5G foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X. It also and showcased the HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro, the first commercial product housing the Balong 5000 chipset.
“With the advent of the all-scenario era, consumers are increasingly looking forward to revolutionary experiences,” Huawei CBG CEO Richard Yu told MWC. “To support the hyperconnected 5G period, Huawei Consumer BG remains committed to the all-scenario smart ecosystem strategy. We will spare no effort to drive pervasive connectivity to individuals, office and homes, and create a world-leading 5G all-scenario smart living experience that is unlike anything that has come before.”
With its Balong 5000 technology, the company said that it has officially unlocked the 5G era. The chipset supports a range of 5G products in beyond just smartphones, including home broadband devices, vehicle-mounted devices and 5G modules. Most of the attention of the new product line was given to the 5G foldable smartphone HUAWEI Mate X, its launch described by the company as a “a voyage into uncharted territory.”
The HUAWEI Mate X combines 5G, a foldable screen, AI and an all-new mode of interfacing to provide consumers with what Huawei says will be an unprecedented user experience and bringing forth a new breed of smartphone.
Experimentations with smartphone form factors have resulted in a 2-in-1 smartphone and tablet featuring a flexible large-screen OLED FullView display and Balong 5000 chipset combining to deliver a new mode of interfacing, display panel. Thought currently priced at over €2000, the foldable smartphone with the Falcon Wing mechanical hinge is said to ‘epitomise the beauty of technology’ and set a higher bar for future smartphones.
In tablet mode, the HUAWEI Mate X allows users to take advantage of two screens simultaneously for multiple tasks and enjoy a desktop-like experience.
At MWC 2019, Huawei executive director and president of the carrier business group Ryan Ding demonstrated a 4K video-on-demand service on the 5G foldable smartphone via a Vodafone Spain 5G live network powered by its technology. Huawei said that the demo showcased the 'extraordinary' Gbit/s-level bandwidth that 5G networks will provide anywhere, anytime.
