The Nordic region’s largest DTH TV provider, Canal Digital, is claiming to be reaping company-wide benefits through new agile software and product development practices, introduced by multiscreen and STB solutions provider 3SS, for its OnePlace service.

OnePlace is designed to deliver next-generation Ultra HD entertainment on STBs and PVRs, based on Android TV, via satellite and OTT to viewers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Now Netflix-integrated, OnePlace is deploying a raft of new features to meet the expectations of viewers. Recent enhancements include: start-over for additional viewing convenience; “Coming soon” teaser promotions to highlight future content assets which subscribers will be able to view when available; display of already-subscribed services, so the user knows at a glance whether an item of content or service is already a component of his or her package; advanced analytics, more commercialisation opportunities, better management control.

As part of the deployment, 3SS delivered a custom launcher for what it says is a powerful, engaging Android TV user experience. At the core of the agile development is SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) an experience-based software development framework designed to accelerate and optimise system deployments. Regular workshops, concurrent work streams, and rigorously organised project update sessions help inform and motivate all stakeholders in a project.

With the help of 3SS, Canal Digital says that it has also enhanced the business potential and attractiveness of OnePlace by deploying MixPanel, an analytics tool which enables Canal Digital to capture and analyse user behaviour across devices.

“The scaled agile development methodology (SAFe) has been a revelation, and it has ignited a revolution in the way we approach product- and technology development at company level,” explained Canal Digital CTO and CIO Henke Erichsen. “With SAFe, we now have a much more transparent, predictable and efficient development process, and our subscribers are reaping the benefits.”
