Weeks after news first emerged that Eleven Sports was in financial difficulties, the streaming service has sold its rights to top class Italian league football to Premier Sports.

elevensports facebook 6August2018Eleven entered the UK market in a blaze of glory kicking out incumbent Sky from its established place as holder of exclusive live rights in the UK and Ireland to all football matches in the premier Spanish football league, LaLiga and also Serie A broadcasting up to 20 live football matches every week. However, the first signs of trouble at the broadcaster emerged in December 2018 with reports of the cancellation of an exclusive deal with mixed martial arts competition UFC.

Premier Sports will now take over the Serie A reins from February 2019 and will air a minimum of six  games per round until the end of the 2020/21 season. The league features some of Europe’s leading clubs such as Juventus, Napoli, Roma, Inter and AC Milan amongst others, along with some of the top footballers in the world such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Mauro Icardi, Paulo Dybala and Dries Mertens.

Weekly highlights and preview shows are set to be broadcast by Premier Sports as well as a number of games live on sister free-to-air channel FreeSports. This deal also includes the acquisition of the Eredivisie and the Chinese Super League with Premier Sports and FreeSports airing the biggest games of each round from the Netherlands and China across their network.

Premier and Eleven Sports have signed a cooperative agreement so that they will both continue to broadcast content non-exclusively in the UK until 25 February 2019 in order to minimise disruption for fans.

Premier Sports is available in the UK homes across the Sky and Virgin pay-TV platforms and via the Premier Player,  while FreeSports will be available to 22 million UK homes across seven different platforms.

“We are delighted to have signed a new partnership agreement with Premier Sports to broadcast the Serie A TIM in the UK and Ireland until the end of the 2020/2021 season,” said Serie A CEO Marco Brunelli. “Thanks to this contract, Serie A TIM will have a new home in the UK and Ireland, a very important market for Italian football. We are very happy that now our English and Irish fans will have the chance to watch the best of Serie A TIM and admire our world-class Champions.”

Richard Sweeney, CEO of Premier Sports, added, “We are delighted to be bringing Italian football to our channel line up along with the other great football leagues. This addition adds tremendous value for our customers who already enjoy top Rugby Union, Scottish football and American sports. We look forward to announcing more content in the coming weeks as we continue to grow Premier Sports into a major pay TV operator in the UK and Ireland.”
