Star TV is to introduce India’s first children’s movie channel after it was granted four new TV channel licences by India’s ministry of information and broadcasting at the end of 2018.

Kids watching TV 22 JanThe licences for Star Movies Kids and Star Movies HD, were joined by two for Star Sports’ latest regional language channels: Star Sports 1 Kannada, which launched on 29 December, and Star Sports 1 Telugu, which launched on 7 December 2018.

India’s children’s genre currently comprises targeted entertainment channels such as Nickelodeon, Pogo, Hungama, Disney, Cartoon Network, Sony Yay!, and Discovery Kids, however there has not yet been a kids movie channel. However, Star India’s digital platform Hotstar streams popular family-oriented Hindi and English live action and animated films.

Delhi-based ad agency Graphisads was also awarded a licence from the ministry of information and broadcasting for two channels, P Plus and PTunes.

Additionally, the ministry approved seven name change applications from major broadcasters.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises got the nod to change the names of two channels acquired from Reliance Broadcast Network . Hence Big Magic and Big Ganga now become Zee Magic and Zee Ganga, while approval was also granted to launch & Xplor HD in place of Big Magic HD.

Sony Pictures Networks India, which had discontinued its channels Le Plex HD and Sony Rox HD, is allowed to rename the two licences as Ten 4 and Ten 4 HD.

Star India has been permitted to change the name of its erstwhile free-to-air Hindi channel Star Utsav Movies to Star Gold Family. While Discovery Communications India’s Hindi GEC Discovery Jeet is being rebranded Jeet Prime.
