Content developer and distributor DRG has acquired the rights to The White Wall, a sci-fi drama being produced by Fire Monkey and NICE Drama for SVT in Sweden and YLE in Finland.

WHITE WALL DRG 16Jan2019Created by Aleksi Salmenperä (A Man’s Job), Mikko Pöllä (Easy Living) and Roope Lehtinen (Black Widows), The White Wall features some of Scandinavia’s leading acting talent, including the award-winning Aksel Hennie (Headhunters, Nobel), Vera Vitali (Bonus Family, Arne Dahl), Anna Paavilainen (Idiomatic), Staffan Göthe (Gentlemen & Gangsters), Ardalan Esmaili (The Charmer, Greyzone) Claes Ljungmark (Follow the Money, Arne Dahl), Eva Melander (The Bridge, Modus) and Karen Bryson (Safe, Shameless).

At its core, the sci-fi thriller tells what happens when a strange white wall is found deep underground, at the mining site of the world’s largest nuclear waste depository. Project director Lars Rapp (Aksel Hennie) wants to keep it a secret, but rumours spread quickly in the small town that has sprung up around the site. The depository is already years behind schedule and nuclear waste is piling up, stored in temporary containers. Completion of the facility is Lar's life’s work so he has no intention of postponing the approaching opening ceremony. However, Lars and his team soon realise that the wall is not made of any material known to man. He has to make a decision that may well be the most important in the history of mankind. Should they leave the wall alone, or should they try to see what’s behind it?

“The White Wall is set to be one of the most exciting and ambitious scripted series to come out of Scandinavia in recent years,” said Dave Clarke, DRG’s EVP of content who was also responsible for obtaining the rights. “Its unique storyline, containing universal themes about relationships and human curiosity, high production values and superb cast will definitely get the series noticed. It will also surprise those who assume that only traditional Scandie Noir can succeed internationally.”

Co-creator and executive producer Lehtinen added: “After working with DRG on Black Widows and Easy Living and seeing these shows travel the world in both their original versions and as formats, I am delighted to have The White Wall in such safe and experienced hands. Dave and the team have been very supportive of this project from the outset, so we are now hoping for an enthusiastic response from international buyers.”

Recently into production, the eight-hour series will be officially launched to the international market for pre-sale at NATPE. The series will deliver early in 2020.
