Having put its stake in the ground over a year ago to launch an 8K Ultra HD TV channel on 1 December, Japanese broadcaster NHK has made good on its promise and has indeed gone to air with the ground-breaking offer.

Again, as guaranteed at the 4KHDR Summit 2018 in November 2018, the 8K programming on channel BS8K which offers twelve hours of programming each day, began with the airing of show Stanley Kubrick’s legendary film 2001: A Space Odyssey scanned at 8K resolution by studio Warner Bros.

Explaining what the company would be offering with its new channel, Hiroyasu Masuda, senior manager 8K SHV technical production development told delegates at 4KHDR Summit 2018: “BS8K is dedicated to the best of the best,” he told delegates at the Málaga conference. “We will have something for everyone. We will show sports and [the work of] major orchestras in Europe in Vienna, Berlin and Amsterdam. We wish to tell filmmakers that we will open up the opportunity to tell stories.”

Indeed, NHK promises that its programmes will provide viewers with a sense of full immersion in each scene, imparting the feeling of presence in the stadium or concert hall. Core content will also include TV dramas and nature programs and, in cooperation with NASA, scenes of the Earth shot from the International Space Station (ISS). Art broadcasts will feature masterpieces of the Louvre and the works of Katsushika Hokusai.

The main aim for NHK though is to have 8K operations — which currently comprise three 8K editing suites and two 8K recording studios — fully-functioning for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2020. 8K content will be further enhanced and facilities installed to target full- scale dissemination by the beginning of the Games.

BS8K is joined by sister service BS4K which offers 18 hours of 4K Ultra HD content.
