MultiChoice channel M-Net is working with global content producer and distributor Fremantle to develop an investigative crime thriller set in contemporary South Africa.

M Net logo 29 Nov 2018The eight part drama, Reyka, is set against the tropical coastline and vast sugarcane plantation of KwaZulu Natal. It follows the life of flawed detective Reyka Gama, as she struggles to conceal the horrors of her past.

The story begins 1994, the end of apartheid and the dawning of a new South Africa. Reyka, the 11 year old daughter of African and British parents is abducted. Fast forwarding, she has escaped her kidnapper and is a mother and brilliant detective. She returns to her home town to lead the investigation into a serial killer behind a string of brutal murders where victims’ burnt bodies are being found in the sugar-cane fields. However, past and present collide to reveal a dark secret of her own.

Rohan Dickson, nominated for a screenwriting Palm d’Or for his film Husk, is the series creator and showrunner. UK based Jake Riddel (Death in Paradise, Suspect) will work with Dickson as story consultant and writer.

The series will be jointly produced by Serena Cullen for Serena Cullen Productions in the UK and Harriet Gavshon for Quizzical Pictures in South Africa. Rekya will be distributed worldwide by Fremantle.
