Sun Bangla will carry original commissioned content, and aims to achieve a 10-12% share of the viewing audience within a few years. Break-even is expected within three years, projects Sun TV.

Kalanithi Maran-owned Sun Network announced in August its intention to venture into new regional markets from its South India stronghold through the introduction of the Bengali channel and a Marathi channel.

The Sun Network is also set to invest in the creation of original content for its over-the-top (OTT) video platform Sun NXT, which offers support in four South Indian languages: Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. In a change of strategy, certain content will premiere on Sun NXT and then be shown on linear channels, while some titles will only be available on the digital platform.

The broadcaster is currently exploring options with telcos to integrate the Sun NXT app with their mobile TV platforms to extend its reach. Sun’s OTT platform is already available on Jio TV and Airtel TV.
