China Mobile 5G Innovoation Centre and Huawei are demonstrating what they claim as the first 5G network-based 8K virtual reality (VR) live broadcast at the World Internet Conference in China.

China 5G 8Nov2018Compared with 4K VR live broadcasts, which require a data rate of 50-80Mbps, 8K VR services require data speeds of 100-160Mbps and wider bandwidth.

The faster network speed and increased display resolution will allow users to benefit from a more detailed, true-to-life, and immersive experience.

For the demonstration, the 8K VR live broadcast was delivered through Zhejiang Mobile’s 5G network, which comprises Huawei developed 5G C-band sites and the core network.

“Owing to the favorable uplink and downlink transmission conditions (bandwidth over 100 MHz) in the 5G network , the 8K VR 360° camera captured picturesque South Lake views and then uploaded the compiled videos for cloud rendering in real time. The scenery videos were then downloaded at an ultra-high 5G speed to VR headsets. The breathtaking panorama of islands scattered throughout the lake, combined with red boats and gardens feature such vividly accurate colors and rich details that allow audiences to enjoy a fully immersive and mesmerizing sightseeing experience,” the companies said in a statement.

VR video can also be applied for concerts and sports events, but also gaming, entertainment videos, healthcare, real estate, retail, distance learning, engineering, among a wide range of 5G services.

China Mobile 5G Innovation Center plans to continue its cooperation with industry partners, in exploring and developing 5G applications and the 5G ecosystem, ready for their commercial launch.
