Helping it boost its portfolio as it slugs it out with rival subscription video-on-demand services, Netflix is to add to its catalogue When Heroes Fly, an award-winning drama that broke ratings records in Israel.

The hit production will premiere on Netflix following its recent acquisition from global content producer and distributor Keshet International.

Produced by Spiro Films for Keshet Broadcasting, When Heroes Fly is inspired by a best-selling novel and set deep in the Columbian jungle. Written and created by Omri Givon (co-creator of Hostages), the drama centres on four friends, veterans of a Special Forces unit, who, eleven years after falling out, must reunite for one final and deeply personal rescue mission. It features an impressive ensemble cast of internationally recognised actors, including Tomer Kappon (Fauda, Hostages), soon to star in Amazon Prime’s The Boys, and singer/songwriter Ninette Tayeb (Zaguri, Our Song), arguably Israel’s biggest entertainment star.

When Heroes Fly debuted on Keshet 12 from May, increasing slot average by 35% in ratings and 21% in share, and making it the channel’s most watched drama since the Channel 2 split in November. As a result, the series was recommissioned min-run by Israel’s most watched commercial channel for a second season of 8-10 episodes. The global deal with Netflix will see all ten episodes (1 x 80’, 9 x 40’) of the original Hebrew-language drama made available with subtitles around the world in early 2019.

Commenting on the win, Keshet International COO and president Keren Shahar said: “We are thrilled to be announcing this global deal with Netflix. When Heroes Fly is one of those series that instantly grabs you and keeps you hooked until the very end. Featuring breath-taking cinematography and a stellar cast, this series feels completely international and totally at home on a global platform like Netflix.”
