After several quarter of losing subscribers, the Latin American pay-TV returning to additions during the second quarter of 2018, marking a quarterly growth of 1% according to research from Dataxis.

Dataxis PayTV 7Oct2018The analyst attributes coverage across the region of the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the main factor of the change in market conditions. In all, the analyst calculates that there are 72.06 million legal pay-TV subscribers across the region. However, despite the growth in subs, Dataxis added that ARPU from these subs went down to US$21.5 as a result of the devaluations of local currencies in several markets over the quarter.

Looking as to which companies are driving the industry, Dataxis cited DirecTV as taking great advantage of the global football event and recording growth in key markets such as Chile and Colombia.

Although DirecTV is still the second regional player in terms of subscribers, it reduced the gap with the leader America Móvil to a historic minimum of 0.8%.
