Sony Pictures Network India has clinched the south Asian media rights to India’s inaugural mixed martial arts (MMA) Kumite 1 league, to be mentored by former world boxing champion Mike Tyson.

Tyson Kumite 1 league 13 Sept 2018The Kumite 1 league will be broadcast and streamed by Sony ESPN, starting with the opening bout between India and the UAE on 29 September at Mumbai’s NSIC Dome.

“Mike Tyson will fly into the country ahead of time to meet and encourage the fighters. On the fight night he will officially launch Kumite 1 league and kick-start the fight. Twenty four MMA fighters from all over the world will gather at the NSIC dome,” the organisers said in a statement.

Kumite 1’s promoter Mohammedali Budhwani said: “It gives us immense pleasure to be telecast live on Sony ESPN. As broadcast partners, they have shown immense support and have an inherent understanding of MMA. I am confident with Mike Tyson as our mentor and Sony ESPN as our broadcast partners we will take giant strides in popularising MMA and making the sport one to reckon with as we cut across nations and languages”.

Through Sony and ESPN’s sports portfolio the Kumite 1 league will reach India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan and the Maldives.

Worldwide, the Kumite 1 league’s launch and fight night will be available in over 80 countries and 85,57,000 households, the organisers said.
