Amazon is introducing a monthly subscription plan for its Prime Video streaming service in India, in addition to the annual Prime membership model it has adopted worldwide.

Amazon Ranaga 12May2018Without any fanfare, Prime Video is being offered for a monthly fee of INR 129, currently payable only by debit or credit card. The monthly subscription will be auto-renewed every 30 days via the selected payment method. Users will be reminded of the renewal three days before it takes place, and given an option to continue or to cancel the service.

The yearly subscription for Amazon Prime  is priced at INR 999 in India, and as well as the video streaming service, membership provides free one-day delivery, discounted same-day delivery and Amazon Music.

By comparison, the US version of Prime costs US$119 (about INR 8,100) for annual membership and $12.99 per month.

Amazon India launched its Prime service in July 2016 with promotional pricing of INR 499 for an annual plan. Prime Video and Amazon Music streaming services were added later than the initial benefits for online shoppers were revealed.

More Prime members joined India’s Prime programme in its first year than Amazon had seen in any other country around the world, according to the company’s chief financial officer, Brian Olsavsky.

Amazon has been beefing up its Indian content, recently announcing a new original Raj & DK directed Indian drama series called The Family Man would debut in 2019.

The US subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform has also launched its latest Indian comedy series Chacha Vidhayak Hain Humare and acquired the rights to stream this year’s biggest Telugu blockbuster, Rangasthalam.
