Over-the-top (OTT) players ended 2017 with almost eight million video subscriptions in Mexico, the Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU) has revealed.

netflix movil 20 january 2018With 7.7 million subscribers, OTT platforms are almost as big as cable TV in terms of subscribers, according to the analysts. Cable providers ended 2017 with 8.15 million subs according to official market figures.

The 7.7 million figure has been reached after several quarters of strong growth. During Q4 1027, OTT subs increased by 15% compared with the previous year. On the other hand, cable TV households grew by 3%.

“OTT platforms were initially focused on distribution, but they have now become producers of exclusive original content,” said Rael Camargo, analyst, the CIU. According to him, this strategy has been key to increasing OTT’s penetration in the pay-video market.

These figures confirm Mexico as Latin America’s largest OTT market, followed by Brazil, mirroring the pay-TV market situation. Regarding platforms, Netflix is the leading subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, followed by América Móvil’s Claro video.
