Spain’s Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has opened proceedings against the country’s public broadcaster RTVE for having allegedly aired certain ads with no permission.

According to the Spanish watchdog, RTVE would have broken the law that regulates its financial activities, which doesn’t include advertising as a regular income source.

Spain’s audiovisual law only allows the public corporation to showcase ads under certain exceptions, such as sponsorship of cultural and sports events.

The CNMC  would now investigate the broadcast of advertising spots in four of RTVE’s linear channels, La 1, La 2, 24 Horas and Teledeporte during December 2017 and January 2018. “RTVE has 15 days to present any kind of allegation,” pointed out the market authority.

Over the last few years, RTVE has been looking for any kind of alternative income sources as it has been struggling since advertising was banned and its budget was cut.

During 2017, RTVE managed to deliver strong profit for the first time, announcing a €25 million surplus.
