CuriosityStream 13Feb2018Original science, space, technology, history, nature and health documentary and series maker CuriosityStream has signed a deal with the US National Cable Television Cooperative to allow its content to be available on demand to NCTC members.

The agreement allows NCTC member operators, who serve nearly nine million basic cable subscribers, to deliver to their customers unlimited access to more than 1,500 documentaries, all without commercial interruptions, through the video-on-demand (VOD) service, and through a streaming app on various consumer electronic device platforms. Future plans also include rollout of a streaming app on certain operator set-top box platforms.

Launched by Discovery Communications founder and media visionary John Hendricks, CuriosityStream describes itself as a streaming and on-demand destination where viewers can 'journey through our world and beyond'. Immersive experiences feature experts from Stephen Hawking and David Attenborough to Veritasium's Derek Muller, offering storytelling to demystify science, history, technology and nature. It runs on online video platforms such as Roku, Apple TV, Xbox One, Amazon Fire TV and Google Chromecast, iOS and Android, as well as Amazon Channels, Sling TV, VRV, Comcast Xfinity on Demand, Layer3 TV and the Sony, LG, VIZIO and Samsung smart TV.

"CuriosityStream is proud to partner with NCTC to give its members and their enormous customer base easy access to the world's greatest collection of non-fiction programming that empowers viewers to satisfy their curiosity about their favourite subjects," said chief distribution officer Clint Stinchcomb.

Added NCTC VP, product strategy and management, John Childress: "There is a lot of high quality content out there that consumers may not know about, and this partnership enables our member operators the ability to surface some of that content in convenient ways, enhancing their customers' overall experience."
