BBC Worldwide has inked an agreement with Canal 10, Uruguay’s largest free-to-air (FTA) broadcaster, for a local version of the UK format Great Britons.

gran uruguayo 13 feb 2018Named El Gran Uruguayo, the local adaptation will look for the greatest Uruguayan in history - from the tango singer Carlos Gardel and poet Mario Benedetti to the FC Barcelona player Luis Suárez - with help from the audience.

Voting is already open at the show’s website and 100 personalities have been preselected. The audience will also be able to propose their own candidates.

The Greats format has been sold to over 20 countries since the series launched on the BBC in 2002. In the UK, the nationwide vote was spread over six months with Winston Churchill revealed as the Greatest Briton of all time. The US version saw Ronald Regan pipping Abraham Lincoln for the top spot and the French voted for Charles de Gaulle, with Louis Pasteur coming second.

Through this deal, BBC Worldwide continues to focus on content production and distribution in Latin America.
