Digital video platform iflix has lifted the lid on its first original comedy special featuring the well-travelled Australian comedian Jon Atherton.

iflix DIsoriental poster 2 12 Feb 2018Set to stream globally in mid-2018, the 60-minute special, Jon Atherton: Disoriental, was filmed at the beginning of February in Kuala Lumpur. It follows the comedian's 'midadventures in Asia, a region he's lived and laughed in for two decades', the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) company said.

"I can't think of another comic who can so ably poke fun at the region's diversity and literally 'speak the language', thus achieving an elusive pan-Asian appeal. His remarkable ability to assimilate with the cultures he's lived in makes his comedy authentically local while striking a universal chord," said Mark Francis, iflix global director of original programming.

"We also knew, based on his performance in the iflix original Oi! Jaga Mulut, that our audiences wanted more of Jon's hard-hitting brand of humour. So producing a solo special made total sense," he added.

Those attending the live show, produced by Double Vision, were encouraged to make a donation for non-profit organisation Asylum Access instead of paying for a ticket.

Jon Atherton: Disoriental joins other originals Coconuts TV and Malaysian drama series KL Gangster: Underworld, launching globally this year on iflix.

The SVOD platform, aimed at emerging markets, is now available to over one billion consumers across 25 territories throughout Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
