Peru’s Organismo Supervisor de Inversión Privada en Telecomunicaciones (OSIPTEL) is set to sanction rules to force pay-TV operators to stop charging for set-top boxes (STBs).

osiptel peru 06 february 2018The country’s watchdog says that as STBs are essential to deliver the pay-TV services, providers should have to offer at least one free access point, including both the box and its installation, for Peruvian subscribers.

According to OSIPTEL, the main goal is to reduce the barriers for subscribers to change pay-TV providers, thus improving market dynamism.

“We intend to guarantee a simple and transparent subscription process, improving the conditions for strengthening the competition in the pay-TV market,” said Rafael Muente, president, OSIPTEL.

Following a process started last summer, the watchdog is now considering the proposals made by users, consumers’ organisations and operators. Afterwards, it will present a final set of rules to be sanctioned during 2018.
