China Unicom is partnering with satellite operator Eutelsat to enhance inflight connectivity services across the Asia Pacific.

China Unicom Eutelsat 10 JanPart of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, the agreement covers the use of capacity on Eutelsat 172B satellite to improve airlines’ communications services from the west coast of North America to Asia and south to Australia. Further cooperation to develop satellite communications services around the world is also under consideration.

State-owned communications operator China Unicom provides mobile and IPTV services across the country.

“China Unicom is an ideal partner for promoting satellite communications in Belt and Road regions,” said Rodolphe Belmer (pictured, right), CEO of Eutelsat. “This agreement builds on the cooperation that started in 2008, when Eutelsat provided satellite transmission services to China Unicom during the Beijing Olympic Games. This cooperation also highlights the quality and reach of Eutelsat’s in-orbit resources, in particular at the 172° East orbital position. This reinforced partnership will allow both companies to leverage on their own strengths in order to address future opportunities in the connectivity markets.”

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Paris-based satellite operator and Chinese communications operator was signed on 9 January to mark the state visit to China by French President Emmanuel Macron.
