The Mexican telecoms market will see further growth in 2018, driven by a pay-TV industry that will continue to achieve the positive results shown in recent years, says The Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU).

ciu telecom 2018 27 december 2017With the close of 2017, the analyst forecasts a total invoice for Mexican telcos of over $24 billion, 4.3% more than in 2016. “For 2018, forecasts are even more positive, as telecoms are set to grow by 5%, driven by pay-TV and increasing broadband services,” the CIU said.

Pay-TV is set to end 2017 having invoiced over $4.5 billion, 11.4% more than in 2016. Double-digit growth has been delivered by the Mexican pay-TV industry in recent years, with rates nearing 20% in 2016.

2018 won’t be any different, according to the analyst, as the market will invoice more than $5.2 billion, up by 14.9% on 2017’s total revenues.

“As for the pay-TV market, double-digit growth is forecast despite the deceleration perceived in 2017. For 2018, growth will be driven by income from political campaigns and the coverage of the FIFA World Cup,” said the CIU.

According to the CIU, over-the-top (OTT) players will also continue to gain ground among Mexican viewers, but will mostly remain as a complement to pay-TV platforms.
