In the latest example of how major media organisations are evolving their business by use of social platforms, Bloomberg Media has launched a 24-hour streaming TV channel on Twitter.

bloomberg 19 dec 2018TicToc by Bloomberg will be a general news service rather than strictly financial, relying on staff news reports along with crowdsourced video, images and tweets from the audience, which will all be vetted by a staff of about 50 before being pushed into a curated stream. Headlines will top each hour.

The service is meant to be something different from Bloomberg’s cable net fare, and while it will feature different segments from the linear channel, will rely on existing staff in New York, London and Hong Kong, along with stringers worldwide.

“We have been looking really closely at how one replaces or disrupts a traditional TV news outlet like CNN. We see the answer as an amalgamation of digital, social and television,” said Bloomberg Media CEO Justin Smith. “The essential inspiration for this is Twitter itself.”

The TicToc by Bloomberg service will also act as an advertising vehicle, and will feature branded content from sponsors including AT&T, CA Technologies, CME Group, Infiniti, SAS and TD Ameritrade.
