Marking its first international production, UK-based distribution and rights management specialist Magnify Media has gained a licence for its 6x30 series True Selfie from Dutch public service broadcaster BNN VARA’s channel NPO3.

Produced originally for NRK in Norway by design, commercial PR and production company Anti, True Selfie was hailed as a ‘cultural classic’ when it aired this spring. The show is produced by Endemol Shine-owned Simpel Media and follows the therapy process of eight young people with mental health issues from two perspectives: their self-filmed video diaries and group therapy sessions.

True Selfie has been optioned by a range of international producers such as Bristow Global Media in English-speaking Canada and through French-speaking Canada by Trio Orange; in Sweden with Elk; in Finland by ITV Studios; and in Denmark with United Productions with whom it has now been commissioned for a second series.

Commenting on the new deal, Magnify Media CEO Andrea Jackson said: “True Selfie was the first format that I acquired when setting up Magnify Media and represents the type of programming that we are very proud to distribute. I have always believed deeply in its powerful message that tackles issues around mental health and self-image in a world dominated by technology.”

Added Birgitte Bruusgaard, Anti executive producer and head of TV and content: “We are so happy that True Selfie is about to be discovered and aired first in the Netherlands and then hopefully around the world. Magnify has done a great job and really believes in the importance of True Selfie and the difference the show can make to mental health issues amongst young people.”
