UK communications infrastructure and media services provider Arqiva has lengthened its contract to deliver fibre data collection and uplink services for digital satellite television service Freesat.

The deal extends a ten-year partnership between the two companies, which dates back to the launch of the free-to-air television service as a joint venture between the BBC and ITV in 2007.

Freesat has been obliged to evolve over the last few years as it aims to meet the demands of a changing digital landscape. The continuation of its facilitation agreement with Arqiva means that its two million homes will receive its services thanks to the transmission of the Freesat Home Transponder, a data service available on a satellite at 28 degrees east, which enables Freesat’s electronic programme guide (EPG) to function.

Commenting on the deal, Alex Pannell, commercial director, satellite and media at Arqiva, said: “[We have] worked alongside Freesat on every step of its journey since its foundation a decade ago, and we are thrilled that we can continue to be part of this project with the long-term extension of our partnership. Over the years we have ensured that our service has evolved alongside Freesat’s offering, and we remain absolutely committed to providing the right technical and commercial solution in the coming years.”
