Public streaming services are becoming a key springboard for local video-on-demand (VOD) content, Business Bureau has revealed.

According to the analysts, most of the over 250 over-the-top (OTT) platforms available across Latin America are privately-funded, being either independent or belonging to pay-TV operators. However, public platforms are gaining ground, especially as a distribution window for Latin America-produced content.

The increasing trend is led by Argentina’s Cine.ar Play, which has over 700 local VOD titles available and more than 700,000 registered users. It also offers a transactional VOD (TVOD) service for the latest premieres and has just released a free international catalogue.

Funded by Colombia’s minister of culture, Retina Latina is a free VOD service that competes in the local market with 160 films produced in the country. Chile has Ondamedia, supported the the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes, with over 300 titles, and Antel has just supported the launch of ClickVeo! in Uruguay.

Mexico doesn't have its own public platform, but the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía sponsors a content package in the SVOD platform Filmin Latino, enabling subscribers to access a free local catalogue of nearly 1,000 titles.

“In an industry in which OTT offering is growing larger, multi-screen users have become more demanding. OTTs should try to be different, and content quality is one of the distinguishing factors. Local content shows proximity to the audience and enables the platform to increase the reach of local directors, artists and producers,” said Tomás Gennari, EVP, Business Bureau.
