Soap operas are no longer the most popular genre in Latin America, according to research by Kantar IBOPE Media.

kantar telenovela 23 november 2017Although telenovelas are still popular, they are only the most demanded content in Brazil, where Globo has its powerhouse, Panama, Paraguay and Ecuador. In the rest of the region, soap operas are competing with sports programmes, reality shows and comedies.

According to the report, Colombians watched more reality shows, game shows and dramas than any other genre during the first ten months of the year. Realities are also the audience favourite in Uruguay and Guatemala, with soap operas taking the second place in both countries.

In Argentina and Peru, comedies and humorous shows are the most watched content, followed by game shows and football in the Andean country and by telenovelas and reality shows in Argentina.

Chileans go for sports, youth shows and fiction, while Costa Ricans prefer to watch the news, followed by game shows and soap operas, according to Kantar IBOPE Media.

Across the four countries in which telenovelas are the favourite type of programming, Brazilians also like to watch football and films, while in Panama, reality shows and family shows complete the top three; in Ecuador, talk shows and news follow soap operas; and in Paraguay, films and series finish the ranking.
