Sweden’s largest commercial TV broadcaster, TV4 Group, has signed an agreement with Norwegian online video technology firm Norigin Media to build smart TV apps for its advertising video-on-demand (AVOD) service.

TV4group 13Nov2017Part of the Bonnier Group in Sweden, TV4 has just over a third of the country´s population registered as users. Bonnier Broadcasting is one of the Nordic region’s leading TV companies. In addition to the main free-to-air (FTA) channel, TV4, which over a number of years has been Sweden's largest TV channel, the group’s portfolio includes several of Sweden’s most popular TV channels, as well as the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service C More, which is the fastest growing streaming service in Sweden.

The Bonnier Group has a stated aim of wanting a pay-TV offering beefed up with an advertisement-funded service. The TV4 Group says that in addition to being well versed in over-the-top (OTT) solutions, it has been one of the first in the Nordic region to deliver an SVOD service. It adds that that it was keen to find a Scandinavian partner able to deliver a sleek user interface along with a proven technology base, in line with the ever evolving, complex smart TV environment.

Norigin Media has experience in developing mobile and smart TV streaming apps for multiple TV operators across Europe for many years and this was regarded as pivotal in TV4’s decision to buy the Canvas Apps development services.

The new bespoke AVOD service will use Norigin’s multiscreen TV app modules that support ad integrations on both video-on-demand (VOD) and live TV content. The modules are supported across different Smart TVs and will be initially used for the launch on Samsung Tizen. The application will be directly integrated towards TV4’s advanced OTT platform, giving viewers free access to live and on-demand content.

“We see an increased consumption on smart TV platforms amongst our users. This is a natural next step to widen our AVOD service, and we are very pleased to work with Norigin Media in delivering a TV app to this new platform,” said Cecilia Engelbert, product owner for smart TV at Bonnier Broadcasting. “We always strive to improve the experience in our streaming services and we strongly believe that this platform will be of great value to our users going forward.”

Added Norigin Media  CEO Ajey Anand: “There is a lot of new activity from broadcasters and operators on smart TVs, especially while integrating advertisements with VOD and live TV streaming services. Samsung, LG and Sony are pushing the limits on distribution of their smart TVs into many markets and Norigin is glad to be in the middle of it all. We look forward to the relationship with the Bonnier Group who are not just market leaders in Scandinavia, but also a class apart.”
