The season finale of hit BBC One show Doctor Foster beat ratings stalwart The Great British Bake Off last night, pulling in some 7.2 million viewers compared with 5.8 million for the Channel 4 show.

doctor foster series 2Doctor Foster, which told the tale of wrong 'un Simon and his wife Gemma as they try to rebuild their lives after his affair, was the most-watched show of the day. There's no indication so far of a third series of the show, starring Suranne Jones and Bertie Carvel, but if the demand is there it could happen.

Writer Mike Bartlett said: “The BBC has never ever put pressure on us to do more and it’s not that sort of show. You could see that at the end of series one. There were just as many people going, ‘Don’t do a series two’. It’s because people care and I love that.

“There’s a lot of trust that we’d only do more if there’s a story and a reason. So there’s no pressure to do more.”
