The China Daily website is to produce digital content for Russian broadcaster SPB TV to stream on its over-the-top (OTT) platform.

spbtv 26 Sept 2017Part of the framework of Second Russia – China Forum New Media, Youth Collaboration, the companies have signed a licence agreement granting international rights on video-on-demand (VOD) content, comprising entertainment, documentaries and news. The content – in English or local languages – will be made available on both SPB TV’s digital platform and SPB TV’s Belt and Road TV application.

“We are currently witnessing the ever increasing interest in alternative sources of news. The fact that the largest English-language website in China is granting us the rights helps us satisfy our viewers' demand and ensure the geographic expansion of our new Chinese partner,” said Kirill Filippov, CEO, SPB TV.

“Enhancing cooperation with Chinese media is one of the most important strategic development strategies for us and our technological ability allows us to be able to protect the safety of the content,” he added.

SPB TV, which provides OTT TV, IPTV and mobile TV solutions in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), started broadcasting content from China in 2013. It now distributes over 16 Chinese terrestrial channels and four VOD channels, as well as content from Xinhua, Shanghai Media Group, China Central Television (CCTV), and China Economic Network
