América Móvil’s Claro video is claiming to be Netflix’s main competitor in Peru’s over-the-top (OTT) market after attracting 250,000 subscribers.

claro video peru 14 august 2017According to the company, the video-on-demand (VOD) service has gained popularity over the last year, during which it added more than 100,000 subscribers.

“Entertainment consumption habits have changed over recent years, and smartphones have become our first screen to access video platforms, music and games,” said Mariano Orihuela, director of added-value services, Claro.

The growing popularity of SVOD and streaming services has also driven increasing competition for the pioneering services in the country, such as Netflix and Claro video. A year ago, Telefónica launched its own OTT platform, Movistar Play, and last June HBO released its standalone streaming service.

“Access to video platforms influences how users spend their time on the Internet,” added Orihuela. “Just during June, Claro video’s subscribers watched over two million pieces of content on the platform, five times more than in June 2016.”
