European comms giant Altice NV is reportedly in talks to buy Charter Communications, the No 2 cableco in the US.

altice 11 aug 2017Altice, which made its entry into the US cable market in 2015 with the purchase of Cablevision and SuddenLink, would gain significant scale with Charter, which is in the process of integrating its own mega-takeovers of Time Warner Cable and Bright House.

Sources told Reuters that talks are in the early stages.

It’s likely that Altice would look to follow its European model of acquiring, slashing costs and focusing on margins.

"Altice management fundamentally believes that US cable ... margins should be substantially higher than where they are at currently, which along with a willingness to put high leverage on (Charter) underpins what could be a relatively aggressive bid," Jeff Wlodarczak, an analyst at Pivotal Research, told Reuters.
