DirecTV and CNT TV control over 65% of Ecuador’s flat pay-TV market, according to figures reported by the country’s telecom authority Arcotel.
Arcotel says that Ecuador’s pay-TV market ended June 2017 with almost 1.31 million subscribers, 40,000 less than in 2015, when the market peaked. Service penetration stands slightly under 30%.
The figures indicate that the market has stabilised after having boomed in recent years. Between 2010 and 2015 the market grew by almost 500%, from barely 300,000 subs to 1.35 million.
Regarding operators, AT&T’s DirecTV ended Q2 2017 with a gain of 30,000 subs since the beginning of the year, closing the period as the market’s largest operator with over 470,000 households. According to Arcotel, DirecTV controls 36% of the pay-TV market.
CNT TV - the pay-TV service provided by the public telco Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones – is the second largest operator with over 380,000 subscribers and 29% of the market.
The Grupo TV Cable operation has remained stable around the 190,000 subscriber mark (14% share), while América Móvil’s Claro TV hasn’t managed to take off and is reported to have only 30,000 subscribers and less than 3% of the market.
