US streaming giant Netflix is adding to its original Indian content with a female detective series and a drama based on cricket and corruption.

netflix cocastSet in New Delhi, the crime series Again, written by Marisha Mukerjee — whose credits include Quantico and Justified — centres on a detective who puts her career and life at stake when a recent murder links with closed cases from her past, showing there is a serial killer at large.

Mukerjee said the series “not only speaks to my own duality and cultural heritage, but also to the universal grey that exists between life and death, where religion intersects justice”.

In addition, Netflix has ordered the cricket drama Selection Day from all3Media-owned UK independent producer Seven Stories. Based on the novel by Booker Prize winning author Aravind Adiga, Selection Day revolves around the rivalry between two teenage boys in Mumbai.

Seven Stories’ co-founder and director Anand Tucker said: “When I first read Selection Day I was completely overwhelmed by the scale and ambition of Aravind’s vision — and moved to my core by its emotional power.”

Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix, added: “These projects have specifically local subjects, but will be great for our global audience, and are supported by world class talent.”

Netflix’ first Indian original Sacred Games, based on the novel by Vikram Chandra, is currently in production by Phantom Films. The series stars Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. Its release date is as yet unknown.

Streaming rival Amazon Prime Video began streaming its first Indian original series in July. Another drama based on cricket, Inside Edge has become the most popular content on the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service in India.
