Premium sports network Eurosport has reported an 18% audience growth for its Roland Garros 2017 programming.

nadal eurosport 15 june 2017According to the network, average audience figures soared to over one million, not only through the live broadcasts of the games, but also through long- and short-form content such as the daily magazine show Game Schett & Mats.

Compared to 2016, Roland Garros registered triple and double-digit growth for Eurosport in several markets, including Denmark (+123%), Spain (+60%), Romania (+47%), Germany (+20%) or Sweden (+20%).

Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton said: “At a time when there is a general feeling that the amount of viewers watching live sport on TV is in decline, Eurosport continues to defy that belief with a record-breaking 18% audience growth for Roland Garros, building on an overall viewership increase for Eurosport 1 of 9% this year.”

Driven by Rafa Nadal’s tenth title at the French Open, Eurosport 1 recorded its best ever Roland Garros in Spain with a 60% year-on-year increase and an average audience of 62,000. 407,000 tennis fans watched Nadal’s display in the men’s singles final against Stan Wawrinka.

However, the figures are far below those reported by free-to-air (FTA) broadcasts, as Telecinco reached 4.2 million viewers with the coverage of the final in Spain.
