In a move that may indicate a future major mobile play, Telefónica is adding live football content to its mobile bouquet in Chile and Brazil.

Telefónica’s Chilean business unit has already tested the mobile platform by broadcasting the national competition and the Copa Chile, following an agreement with the linear football channel, CDF.
“We’re going to stream the most important games of each competition, which will be available for Android and iOS smartphones. Our main goal is that #ModoFubtol users gain access to highly attractive content, anywhere, at any time,” said Rodrigo Sajurio, manager of business development, Movistar Chile.
As for Brazil, Telefónica’s Vivo will stream the national team’s next games on mobile devices, becoming the first operator to do so in the country.
Vivo’s 74 million mobile clients will have access to the friendly games the Seleçao is playing in Australia on 9 and 13 June. The live streaming signal will be available for free through the mobile site Vivo Futebol.
“Vivo has been the official sponsor of the Seleção Brasileira de Futebol for 12 years, which is why we’re extending our partnership with the CBF [Confederação Brasileira de Futebol] to increase alternatives for football fans,” explained Ricardo Sanfelice, VP, digital strategy and innovation, Vivo.
In Brazil, Telefónica has recently upped its live sports content for mobile customers, aiming to increase video possibilities beyond traditional businesses such as pay-TV.
For example, it has mounted an MMA series specifically for mobile screens through a partnership with Vivendi and has also streamed the NBA play-offs.
