IP-based technologies continue to lead the pay-TV market, not only in terms of subscribers but also regarding the bottom line.
IPTV and ADSLTV ended Q4 2016 with €285 million in revenue, an increase of 60% year-on-year. Cable revenues remained flat at around €55 million and satellite decreased from €153 million to €140 million.
If there is a market strategy to be blamed for IPTV’s success among Spaniards, that is convergence and increasing penetration of fibre technology. Since allowed by the market authority, convergent packages have increasingly seduced consumers, driving pay-TV figures to break records.
According to the CNMC, 2016 ended with 6.06 million pay-TV households, 5.18 million of which were subscribing to a convergent package. In fact, pay-TV packaged offers, such as quad- and quint-play, gained 120,000 subscribers in the last quarter of the year.
