Almost three-quarters of senior executives at content owners, broadcasters, distributors and pay-TV operators consider features which enable content discovery to be the most important UI capability for viewer retention and satisfaction.

3Vision 18may2017This is the standout finding of research from content consultancy 3Vision which explores topics such as the impact of SVOD, content discovery and recommendations, developments in licensing rights and release windows, and emerging pay-TV trends.

The research also found that almost half of the executives were confident that original production and content ownership will become increasingly important, and virtually all believe content licensing windows will continue to evolve over the next three years, while 17% said that broadcasters and pay-TV operators will face tougher competition. Other trends discovered were that 29% regarded usage based recommendations as the key UI feature key for customer retention and satisfaction, while 18% noted trend-based recommendations and 15% cited global search.

“It was interesting to see where there was general consensus on the future of Pay TV but also the areas of uncertainty that have been highlighted,” commented 3Vision director of global trends and insights, Jack Davison. “Control of content, increasing complexity and expectation of further change all came out in responses. With the increasing volume of choice on offer it is also hardly surprising that recommendation tools are seen as key components of an operator’s user journey.”
