South Africa’s Showmax has inked a deal with Polish mobile operator Play, three months after the video streaming service first entered the Eastern European country.

Showmax play Poland 17 May 2017Play’s eight million contracted customers will now be able to stream Showmax’ content on-demand for 12 months, with no extra charge. The video-on-demand (VOD) service will also be available to Play’s remaining six million customers for one month.

“The level of interest in Showmax since our launch in Poland earlier this year has exceeded even our most optimistic estimates. The Play transaction is a big deal for us because it gives us instant access to millions of customers and I’m hoping will help us build on the great start we’ve already had in the country,” said John Kotsaftis, CEO, Showmax.

The Naspers’ owned subscription VOD company provides a local offering in Poland including short films directed by Polish directors Patryk Vega and Wojciech Smarzowski. Showmax has also secured the rights to the popular political satire series Ucho Prezesa (The Chairman’s Ear).

Showmax’s operations in Poland are based in Warsaw and headed up by former Google executive Maciej Sojka. He is supported by Grzegorz Esz, formerly of UPC Polska, as head of marketing and Jerzy Dzięgielewski (ex-HBO Central Europe) as head of content.

“We’ve built our business in Poland around the premise that success requires having boots on the ground, having a deep understanding of customer needs, and having a willingness to make more than cosmetic changes to meet those needs,” said Kotsaftis.

“We’ve made good progress by partnering with incredibly talented local producers and directors, and it’s great to now expand that partnership approach and work with one of the leading mobile networks.”

Showmax launched in August 2015 in South Africa and is now available in more than 60 countries.
